How to enable basic desktop icons in GNOME?
Many people using GNOME (either in Ubuntu or elsewhere) feel that they are missing icons to their beloved 'Computer', home folder, network servers and trash can on their desktop, but did you now they are actually included into GNOME and that you just have to enable them?

Desktop icons in GNOME

Sometimes this could save you a whole click, so how do we enable this basic feature? We will use gconf-editor, which is available from the repositories or already installed by default and then all we have to do is this:

1. Open a terminal

2. Enter gconf-editor

3. Go to /apps/nautilus/desktop and check the boxes:

Click for a higher resolution

4. Quit gconf-editor. The icons should turn up within a couple of seconds.

Update @ Dec 17 I've been getting a lot of StumbleUpon traffic to this article lately (hi!) which is pretty cool because I have grown to like SU a lot. If you don't already use StumbleUpon, you should give it a try, because it is simply great. The content is exciting and completely customizable to your interests and you will likely find dozens of sites you would have never found using search-engines or other social media sites. Whether you like cats, physics, baking cakes or programming: it's all there! Give it a try!
